CHICAGO (TCD) -- Two men have been arrested and charged for their alleged role in the drive-by shooting death of a girl who was on her way home from celebrating her birthday.
On Tuesday, Nov. 29, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown announced at a media briefing that 22-year-old Malik Parish and 20-year-old Abdul Ali were arrested and each face a count of felony first-degree murder for the death of Nyzireya Moore.
Parish was additionally charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. Ali faces charges of unlawful aggravated use of a weapon and a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass for allegedly being in the stolen car.
Brown said the two men were taken into custody Nov. 27.
Parish, Ali, and another person were reportedly in a car on the 2300 block of West 72nd Place when they allegedly opened fire at another vehicle. Moore’s family was reportedly driving down the street when she was struck and shot in the head. She died at the hospital and had just turned 12 years old.
Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan also said at the press conference an anonymous witness came forward, which helped lead to the arrest of the two men, as well as surveillance footage from the area. Deenihan said there has been an "ongoing dispute in this specific area," which allegedly led to the shooting.
Deenihan said one of the two men confessed that they were shooting at a "rival group." Investigators are still looking for the third person in the car.
According to Brown, Parish has been arrested 11 times and is a convicted felon, while Ali has four prior arrests.
After the press conference, Brown tweeted, "Today, I hope to have brought a small measure of closure to the family of a 12-year-old girl who was tragically killed in March of 2022. I announced charges for her murder this morning and I want to thank the community and our officers who worked together to make this possible."
