Woman who gave birth on the sidewalk and abandoned child in freezing weather is sentenced to prison

OMAHA, Neb. (TCD) -- A 28-year-old woman who gave birth to a little boy on a sidewalk on a below-freezing day and abandoned him has been sentenced to prison.
According to WOWT-TV, a judge handed Trinity Shakespeare a prison term of two years and one day with 18 months of supervised release. She has reportedly received credit for 210 days of time served, and WOWT reports she could be released in March.
A judge also ordered Shakespeare participate in a substance abuse program after she gets out.
On Feb. 13, at around 10 a.m., Omaha Police received a call about conducting a welfare check on a woman near 24th and P streets. Officers learned Shakespeare "had given birth on the sidewalk, then abandoned the baby."
The child was reportedly found and taken to Nebraska Medical Center because he had been exposed to cold temperatures.
WOWT reports the weather outside was 15 degrees, but the child survived.
Police reportedly located Shakespeare at a friend’s house nearby and arrested her for felony child abuse. According to WOWT, she pleaded no contest to the charge in July.
