DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (TCD) -- A 19-year-old woman stands accused of setting up a robbery at her ex’s home, which resulted in the stabbing death of her 21-year-old boyfriend.
On Wednesday, Jan. 11, at approximately 12:52 a.m., Daytona Beach Police officers responded to 201 Shady Place to a report of a person shot, police said. Upon further investigation, police learned the deceased victim, Devyn Strickland, "had attempted to rob a male inside."
Kaylee Grigsby Leinum and her boyfriend, Strickland, allegedly planned to rob her ex-boyfriend of $1,000 that Grigsby Leinum knew he had, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports. Once there, the victim and Grigsby Leinum’s ex began to argue over her before Strickland reportedly tried to rob the ex-boyfriend at gunpoint.
Police Chief Jakari Young told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that Strickland shot at Grigsby Leinum’s ex-boyfriend multiple times, but his cellphone blocked the shots and saved him.
In self-defense, the suspect’s ex-boyfriend allegedly pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Strickland.
Strickland and Grigsby Leinum fled the home but were found nearby, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports. Strickland was brought to Halifax Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police Detective Sgt. David Dinardi told The Daytona Beach News-Journal, "This was a case of self-defense," and that the ex-boyfriend "was justified in killing Devyn Strickland."
On Monday, Jan. 16, Grigsby Leinum was arrested and booked into the Volusia County Jail for second-degree murder, where she remains held without bond, records show.
