Florida man convicted of stealing truck and fatally running over his girlfriend

LAKE MARY, Fla. (TCN) -- A 31-year-old man was recently convicted of carjacking an acquaintance's truck and then fatally running over his girlfriend.

According to the State Attorney's Office for the 18th Judicial Circuit, a jury found Toivante "Toby" Williams guilty on July 28 of second-degree murder, carjacking, trafficking methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He faces life in prison and is set to be sentenced on Aug. 7.

The acquaintance, Javier Martinez, reportedly testified and said he was driving Williams and the defendant's girlfriend, 39-year-old Katrina Redden, in a white Ford F-150 on the evening of May 24, 2021. He told jurors that Williams became "angry" and "accused him of flirting with Redden." Williams allegedly began beating the acquaintance, and he was able to escape but without his phone, shoes, or wallet. According to prosecutors, surveillance footage captured Martinez walking in his socks before he made it to a store to call for help.

Dispatch reportedly received a report of a man yelling, "Get a ride now!" before the defendant ran over Redden near a parking lot and then turned around and ran over her again.

According to the state attorney's office, the defense "pointed to an absence of traffic-camera photographs that could prove he drove the truck at the time of the murder." Williams had reportedly tried to blame Martinez for the victim's death, but prosecutors used GPS data to place the defendant at the crime scenes.

Prosecutors said Williams also brought methamphetamine and a gun with him on the night of his girlfriend's slaying.
