PONTOTOC COUNTY, Okla. (TCD) -- A 53-year-old man was arrested after allegedly striking and fatally strangling his friend while they were fishing in a river.
According to a news release from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, on Sunday, July 10, an investigation was launched by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office after Larry Sanders allegedly killed Jimmy Knighten by the South Canadian River.
On Saturday, July 9, Sanders and Knighten were reportedly "noodling" when a confrontation turned physical, and Sanders fatally attacked Knighten.
Noodling is reportedly another term for hand fishing.
A day after Knighten’s death, on Sunday, July 10, KTEN-TV reports that authorities found the victim’s body.
Sanders reportedly admitted to one of his family members that he had killed his friend.
Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian told KTEN that Sanders’ statement was that "Mr. Knighten had summoned ‘Bigfoot’ to come and kill him; that’s why he had to kill Mr. Knighten."
According to the bureau, Sanders was arrested and booked into the Pontotoc County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. The medical examiner will reportedly determine the cause and manner of the victim’s death.
