KEY WEST, Fla. (TCD) -- A 57-year-old business owner allegedly fatally shot a 21-year-old man who urinated on the side of his building.
According to a news release from the Key West Police Department, officers responded to a shooting in the Searstown parking lot on Monday, Feb. 13, at around 12:28 a.m., and found the victim, Garrett Hughes, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police said lifesaving measures were attempted, but the victim was ultimately transported to the Lower Keys Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
At the scene, officers reportedly found a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
The suspect, Lloyd Brewer, was still at the scene and immediately detained, according to police.
Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward told WPLG-TV that Hughes, who was shirtless and unarmed, was drunk when he urinated on Brewer's building, which contains a bar and other tenants. Video surveillance reportedly showed Brewer confronting Hughes while also drunk.
According to WPLG, Ward said, "Hughes is kind of stumbling around and Brewer pulls up his shirt, pulls out a gun, and pumps a shot into his stomach."
Brewer then allegedly called 911 and said he shot the victim in self-defense.
Brewer was arrested and booked into the Monroe County Jail for murder –– dangerous depraved without premeditation and first-degree felony with weapon, records show.
