LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (WPIX) -- The man who recorded video of Eric Garner's 2014 Staten Island arrest that led to his death has been released from prison, PIX11 confirmed Monday.
Ramsey Orta, 28, was sentenced to four years in prison in October 2016 on weapons and drug charges. He was released on May 28 from Queensboro Correctional Facility, as the Department of Corrections continues to release individuals to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a DOC official said.
Rolling Stone reports Orta's prison sentence officially end on July 11, then he will remain under court supervision until January 2022.
In July 2014, Orta, then 22, recorded cops as they approached Eric Garner near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and accused him of selling loose cigarettes. NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo put his arm around Garner's neck and pulled him to the ground. Garner repeatedly told officers that he couldn't breathe and died soon after the altercation. Pantaleo was fired in August 2019 without pension.
