Georgia professor arrested for allegedly fatally shooting 18-year-old student

CARROLLTON, Ga. (TCD) -- A 47-year-old college professor was taken into custody after he allegedly shot into a parked car, killing an 18-year-old student.
According to the Carrollton Police Department, on Saturday, July 30, at 12:27 a.m., officers were called to Tanner Medical Center because they received a report about a female suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman, who police identified as 18-year-old Anna Jones, died from her injuries.
During their preliminary investigation, detectives reportedly learned Richard Sigman was in Adamson Square when he got into a verbal altercation with another man. The man reportedly told security that Sigman threatened to shoot him. The security guard approached Sigman and told him to leave after noticing he had a gun. Sigman allegedly walked towards the parking deck and shot at a parked car, which Jones was sitting in.
Jones' friends reportedly drove her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Carroll County Jail records show Sigman was booked on charges of murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during commission or attempt to commit certain felonies.
According to WSB-TV, the University of West Georgia fired Sigman and said officials were working with law enforcement officials during the investigation.
Jones reportedly graduated from Mount Zion High School in Carrollton in 2022.
