HUDSON, Ohio (TCD) -- A jury indicted a 57-year-old former doctor this week in connection with the rape of a young woman several months ago.
Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Walsh announced Wednesday, July 12, that Mahmud Kara was indicted on one count of first-degree felony rape and one count of third-degree felony sexual battery. The charges stem from an alleged incident in April, in which Kara purportedly sexually assaulted a young woman at his home on Fox Trace Lane.
A spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office told the Akron Beacon Journal Kara faces life in prison if convicted.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Kara previously pleaded guilty to four counts of fifth-degree felony possession of criminal tools in a separate 2018 case.
In that case, the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Ohio State Medical Board worked undercover and investigated Kara. They determined he allegedly failed to follow Ohio code when prescribing weight-loss medications for approximately five years.
Kara had to relinquish his license to practice medicine in Ohio as part of his plea. He was also sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $2,500 fine.
According to PR Newswire, in October 2021, Kara was recognized as a "lifetime achiever" by Continental Who’s Who for his work at his company KaraMD, which sells natural remedies and supplements.
