CHICAGO (TCD) -- Police have arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend while she had an active order of protection against him.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Kenneth Brown allegedly fatally shot the 34-year-old victim in the 500 block of North Long Avenue on Dec. 13, 2023, at around 6:23 a.m. WLS-TV identified the woman as Brown's ex-girlfriend, Maria Roque.
Police issued a warrant for Brown's arrest and said he was considered armed and dangerous. About two weeks after the shooting, Brown was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force on the 3100 block of West Harrison Street and arrested on a murder charge.
Court records obtained by WLS allege Brown killed Roque in front of her children. At the time of the shooting, Roque reportedly had an order of protection against Brown.
Roque's twin brother, Andres Roque, told WBBM-TV one of Roque's children "tried to save her."
She reportedly filed several protective orders against Brown, with the most recent one granted only hours after she was gunned down.
According to records, Brown remains held in the Cook County Jail without bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on Jan. 3.
