Memphis man arrested based on print from severed finger left behind at robbery site 17 years ago

MEMPHIS (TCD) -- A 45-year-old man whose finger was severed while he allegedly robbed a home in 2006 was caught and arrested last week.
Shelby County Jail records show Terence Stewart was booked on four counts of aggravated robbery and three counts of attempted aggravated robbery relating to an incident in November 2006.
According to court records cited by WREG-TV, on Nov. 4, 2006, Stewart and another man allegedly broke into a home in Fox Meadows where eight people were sleeping. They reportedly demanded money from the people inside and fired their guns. WREG reports the suspects stole wallets from four of the eight men, while another was knocked unconscious after getting pistol-whipped.
The pistol-whipped man, however, reportedly woke up, grabbed a "long, saber-type sword," and sliced off one of Stewart’s fingers.
When Memphis Police arrived at the scene, they found the finger and entered it into a fingerprint database, which is how they identified Stewart as a suspect. WREG reports police issued a warrant for his arrest, but it was not clear why it took nearly 17 years to take him into custody.
Stewart was released from jail after posting $200,000 bond on July 28.
