FRESNO, Calif. (TCD) -- A 40-year-old father and his 19-year-old son stand accused of accidentally fatally shooting two people, including one of their own family members, during an alleged feud.
According to a news release from the Fresno Police Department, on Friday, July 8, shortly after 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the 3800 block of East Iowa Avenue to a report of a shooting.
At the scene, authorities reportedly found two victims, 21-year-old Stacy Zurita and 25-year-old Raul Nunez. The two victims were transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
Upon further investigation, detectives from the Homicide Unit learned there had a been a fight between members of the Zurita and Nunez families. A vehicle was reportedly seen leaving the scene but returned a short time later. Shots were then fired, striking the two victims.
Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantez told KFSN-TV, "The video surveillance footage shows Leobardo Zurita, who had a long ponytail at the time, in the passenger side of the car of the vehicle, and at the time the shots were fired, we can clearly see that Leobardo is the right front passenger."
The two suspects, Leobardo Zurita and his father, Gerardo Zurita, were located and booked into the Fresno County Jail for two counts of murder.
Stacy Zurita, one of the victims, was reportedly identified as Gerardo’s daughter and Leobardo’s sister.
Both suspects were questioned, and Leobardo Zurita reportedly admitted to the shooting and said he did not intend to injure his sister and feels "remorseful."
According to KFSN, both suspects could potentially face the death penalty if they’re convicted on all counts.
