HAMPTON, Va. (TCD) -- A 46-year-old man turned himself in to police this week several months after he allegedly shot and killed his longtime girlfriend, who was also a high school teacher.
The Hampton Police Department announced Tuesday, Feb. 27, that Calvin Lamont Jackson went to the Pat G. Minetti Public Safety Building and surrendered to police, and he was subsequently arrested on charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and shooting into an occupied dwelling.
Hampton Police publicly identified Jackson as the suspect in Joi Kimitra Brown's death the same day he was taken into custody.
On June 25, 2023, Hampton Police Department officers responded to a residence on Wendell Drive regarding a gunshot victim. When they arrived, they found Brown inside and pronounced her dead at the scene. An adult male was also inside the home with a life-threatening "unknown injury."
Police clarified that the "unknown injury" referred to officers seeing a "physical injury in which the cause could not be determined at the scene."
The shooting was believed to be "domestic-related."
According to WAVY-TV, Brown taught health and physical education at Kecoughtan High School and worked in real estate. Jackson and Brown were reportedly in a relationship for a long time before the fatal shooting. He is also the father of her child.
WAVY reports one of Brown's friends became concerned on June 25 because Brown's daughter could not reach her. The friend said that was "not normal for Joi," so she went to Brown's house and found her in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head. Jackson was injured inside the home as well.
One of Brown's friends told WAVY, "She was a very loving and caring person. She would give you her last if she had it. She was a great friend."
