DAYTON, Ohio (TCD) -- A 31-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter were fatally shot last week inside their home hours after police responded to a domestic disturbance call at their address.
Dayton Police Maj. Jason Hall said in a media briefing shared by WTDN-TV that on Thursday, June 23, officers responded to 337 Burleigh Ave. around noon to conduct a welfare check after a neighbor, who happens to be the suspect’s father, called to express concern. When Dayton Police officers arrived, they reportedly found the two females fatally shot next to each other on the basement floor.
The suspect, who WHIO-TV identified as Waverly Dante Rashad Hawes, was reportedly found dead inside his car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Huntsville, Alabama.
According to Hall, Hawes and the adult victim, who remained unnamed, had been in a relationship for about a year and a half. Hawes' father lived next door at 333 Burleigh Ave. and reportedly also owned the home Hawes and his girlfriend lived in. Hawes' 9-year-old daughter was present at the time of the shooting, but she was reportedly not injured.
Hall said investigators believe the shootings occurred around 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. Dayton Police reportedly showed up at the home at midnight for a domestic dispute that allegedly revolved around Hawes' PlayStation 5.
Hall mentioned at the media briefing, "We are seeing what avenues we can follow to hold anyone accountable."
