Georgia man accused of killing girlfriend after deputies found him 'covered in blood'

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) -- A 37-year-old man stands accused of killing his girlfriend over the weekend.
According to a press release from the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence at 39 Drake Road in LaGrange on Jan. 30 at approximately 3:13 p.m. At the scene, Jay Davis Gamel was reportedly having a mental health crisis. WSB-TV reports Gamel was threatening to kill himself.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Gamel was found "covered in blood and had minor injuries to his body." Gamel was transported to a local hospital for treatment, the Sheriff’s Office says.
Upon further investigation, deputies reportedly discovered Gamel’s girlfriend, 47-year-old Tracy Shepard, of Lanett, Alabama, deceased in the house. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Shepard had suffered fatal head injuries.
Gamel was identified as the suspect and was arrested and charged with one count of murder, the Sheriff’s Office says.
Gamel reportedly lost his wife, Jennifer Gamel, to COVID-19 in September 2021.
