LOS ANGELES (TCD) -- A 46-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally shooting a 35-year-old scientist who was camping in a state park with his two young daughters.
KCAL-TV reports a judge sentenced Anthony Rauda to 119 years in prison for killing Tristan Beaudette. A jury convicted Rauda in May of second-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, and five counts of second-degree commercial burglary. Two of the attempted murder charges relate to the shooting happening near Beaudette's daughters, but they were not injured in the gunfire.
He was acquitted of other attempted murder charges related to other shootings in the area.
After the shootings, Rauda became known as the "Malibu Sniper."
Beaudette was shot at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas June 22, 2018. According to the Los Angeles Times, Beaudette took his daughters camping at the park because he wanted to give his wife space to study for an upcoming exam. Beaudette, a scientist, and his family were reportedly getting ready to move to Northern California.
The Los Angeles Times reports Rauda shot at several people and cars in the park over the span of about two years.
According to The Associated Press, Rauda was on probation when he was arrested because he had previously been convicted of possessing explosives and a loaded gun.
