MASSENA, N.Y. (TCD) --
The mayor of Massena was arrested on December 1 for allegedly throwing crack cocaine out of his car after failing to yield to an officer.
Detectives and special agents from an undercover operation in association with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security attempted to pull Timmy Currier's vehicle over on suspicion of drug sales and possession at about 12:25 p.m. on Dec. 1, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office.
Currier's vehicle failed to pull over for at least a third of a mile, before stopping near the intersection of Center and Willow streets.
Detectives observed Currier allegedly throwing about a gram of crack cocaine out of his passenger window, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office. Currier was the vehicle's only occupant.
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office said Currier, 55, was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance; tampering with physical evidence; and failure to comply with a police officer.
Syracuse.com reports Currier was police chief in Massena for more than two decades before being elected mayor in 2014. Currier left the job to run for mayor in 2014 as a Democrat, taking office in 2015. He was re-elected in 2018.
