WORCESTER, Mass. (TCD) -- A 24-year-old woman was convicted Monday of murdering her ex-boyfriend in a treehouse in 2018.
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office announced a jury found Julia Enright guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Brandon Chicklis. Prosecutors were reportedly seeking a first-degree murder conviction.
The New Hampshire State Police said at the time that Chicklis was last seen June 23, 2018, and his car was found five days later in a Rindge parking lot off of Route 202.
Enright was arrested in July 2018 and has been in custody since then, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
According to the Telegram & Gazette, 20-year-old Chicklis was stabbed to death June 23, 2018, but his remains were found by a jogger in July. They were reportedly in a tarp and placed in a garbage bag in an area off the road close to where his car was found. The Telegram & Gazette reports the remains were mostly bones, but the medical examiner discovered cuts in the chest cartilage. Mass Live reports a shirt in the bag had 12 slits in it.
Prosecutors reportedly argued that Enright killed Chicklis as a "gift" and "surprise" for her boyfriend. She allegedly bought ropes and chains, though they were never found at the scene. Mass Live reports police found a journal entry in which Enright wrote about the "insatiable curiosity to kill a person."
Enright’s attorney, however, said she was defending herself against a sexual assault.
According to Mass Live, Enright and her boyfriend reportedly drove to New Hampshire three times the day Chicklis was killed. Investigators reportedly discovered blood samples and wet specimens in her room.
Mass Live reports Enright and Chicklis met on the bus to Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School.
According to the Telegram & Gazette, Enright faces a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 years but less than 25 years. She will be sentenced Jan. 18.
