Teen allegedly shoots at Uber driver after spat about social media posts

SAN DIEGO -- (KSWB) -- An Uber driver was shot at multiple times after getting into an argument with one his passengers over posts made on social media, police said Sunday.

San Diego Police Department officers surrounded a home on the 5500 block of San Onofre Terrace Saturday night where a 16-year-old boy, who was accused of firing several bullets into the back window of an Uber driver's silver Mercedes, was inside. He came out and was arrested.

An 18-year-old and two other adults were also ordered out of the home, according to San Diego police officer Robert Heims.

Police said the Uber driver picked up the 16- and 18-year-old from Mission Beach around 10:45 p.m. and took them to the Valencia Park neighborhood. The driver was then called back after the teen forgot his phone, police said.

The 16-year-old boy realized he left his phone in the driver's car, and the driver agreed to bring the boy's phone back to him once he had taken care of his present fare.

"The (present) fare went through the phone and saw he was talking bad about the Uber driver, so they began posting things on social media," he said. "The Uber driver returned the phone and the 16-year-old got into an argument with the driver because of the posts."

The driver drove away, Heims said, and the 16-year-old boy fired several shots at the vehicle, shattering some of the windows.

“I heard about five or six shots,” said Arlean Harris, a neighbor.

Police say nobody was hurt, but neighbors say the shooting never should have happened in the first place.

San Diego Police Departments Southeastern Division is investigating.
