DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) -- A 31-year-old man was recently sentenced to life in prison for ramming into a grandmother’s car and then fatally hitting her when she went to check on the damage.
On June 25, 2014, Dewey Green was driving from Birmingham, Alabama, and exited Interstate 20, driving southbound on Highway 5 when he drove behind a red SUV driven by Janice Pitts, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office said. Green reportedly started to bump into Pitts’ SUV, and the victim got out of her car to check the possible damage.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Pitts’ daughter, Iesha Davis, was in the front passenger seat, and the victim’s 4-year-old grandson was sitting in the backseat.
Witnesses testified that Pitts began yelling at Green about the damage he caused, and then Green pressed the gas, pinning the victim’s body between his vehicle and Pitts’ SUV, the District Attorney’s Office said. Green then allegedly reversed his truck and ran over Pitts.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, a responding officer located Green, and Green said, "Oh my God, what did I do?"
Green later denied running over the victim and asked what had happened.
During the trial, Green reportedly claimed that he suffered a mild traumatic brain injury "that resulted in a seizure and that the truck was a runaway truck, thereby negating his criminal intent."
However, according to the District Attorney’s Office, a neuropsychologist explained to the jury that a person suffering from seizures would not have been able to drive the truck in such an intentional manner. All of Green’s MRIs, EEGs, and X-rays reportedly came out normal.
The District Attorney’s Office said, "The Defendant was seen casually sitting on the median at the scene of the murder, smiling and making faces hours later while at the Sheriff’s Office, and dancing and doing the worm on jail video visits only days after killing Pitts."
On Aug. 21, 2015, Green was convicted on one count of malice murder, three counts of felony murder, and three counts of aggravated assault. Nearly seven years later, on Nov. 21, the District Attorney’s Office announced that Green was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 40 years.
In a statement, District Attorney Dalia Racine said, "This is a case that shocked our community. A grandmother, a law-abiding citizen, driving her daughter to work was senselessly and brutally run over and murdered by the defendant."
Racine continued, "Today, the judge ensured that the defendant cannot harm anyone else. Though nothing can repair the loss that occurred that day, we pray that this sentencing will provide the Pitts family some peace and healing knowing that the defendant was again held to account."
