HOUSTON (TCD) -- A 55-year-old man was recently sentenced to life in prison after sexually assaulting and beating an 86-year-old woman in 2020.
According to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Jack Carlin was initially arrested in February 2020 after breaking into the victim’s house and beating her and sexually assaulting her for approximately four hours. A naked Carlin was inside the woman’s bedroom at the time of his arrest.
Records show he was originally charged with multiple counts, including burglary with the intent to commit another felony and aggravated sexual assault of elderly.
The District Attorney's Office says Carlin knocked on the victim’s door, but she wouldn’t let him in. He went around the back of the residence, using a "lawn statuette" to break into the sliding door.
According to the District Attorney's Office, in the victim’s testimony, the woman said she was scared Carlin would kill her if she didn’t follow his orders. The victim suffered a broken vertebra and knocked-out teeth as a result of the attack.
During the assault, Carlin reportedly took rest breaks, and it was during one of his breaks that the victim’s granddaughter called. The victim was able to get to the phone and tell her about the incident.
The granddaughter reportedly called 911 and the Houston Police Department arrived.
On Tuesday, May 17, Carlin was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of the attack.
During trial, the jury was told Carlin had been convicted in the past of burglary of a habitation in 1989, and aggravated assault in 1996. In 2014, Carlin was also convicted of two counts of indecent exposure and was a registered sex offender, the District Attorney's Office says.
