AUSTIN, Texas (TCD) -- A 35-year-old man stands accused of tracking and fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's new 37-year-old boyfriend after finding out about their affair.
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, at approximately 3:29 a.m., the Austin Police Department said officers responded to the 1400 block of South Meadows Drive to a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers reportedly found Gavin Wood on the the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, Eric LaMountain, reportedly fled prior to officers' arrival.
According to KXAN-TV, it was LaMountain's ex-girlfriend who called 911 and reported the fatal shooting. She told police that LaMountain learned about her romantic affair with the victim, Wood, in late December, and LaMountain was able to use a location-sharing application to track that she was at Wood's home, KTBC-TV reports.
The ex-girlfriend reportedly confronted LaMountain about the affair, and the two broke up on Jan. 8.
Just two days later, on the morning of Jan. 10, LaMountain allegedly texted his ex-girlfriend, "I told you what I would do if you ever cheated on me and I still have his address."
When LaMountain's ex asked if he was planning to kill her, he reportedly said, "Not you."
In a text message, LaMountain sent his girlfriend a photo of a gun, as well as a screenshot showing that he was ride-sharing to Wood's home, KTBC reports. The ex-girlfriend allegedly tried to warn Wood about LaMountain, but he told her to go home.
A short while later, LaMountain allegedly called his ex-girlfriend and admitted to shooting Wood, and he told her that he believed Wood was dead.
Police said LaMountain was located less than an hour after the shooting in the 8500 block of S IH 35 NB, and he was arrested for first-degree murder.
After his arrest, LaMountain reportedly told authorities that he hit Wood in the head with a gun in the front yard, and as Wood tried to run away, LaMountain fired shots at Wood until his firearm was empty.
LaMountain remains held in the Travis County Jail on $1 million bond, records show.
