BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (TCD) -- A 26-year-old woman was taken into custody this month for allegedly allowing a boy she was watching to drink an alcoholic beverage at a gas station.
According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 5 at 8:24 p.m., Victoria Hampton allegedly walked into the Marathon Gas Station located at 2560 Millville Oxford Road with the 6-year-old boy, who was carrying a Smirnoff Ice and drinking from it. The boy was even reportedly "offering the alcohol to customers in the store."
WLWT-TV reports an employee at the gas station called 911 about the incident and she said she distracted the boy by offering to buy him whatever he wanted at the mini mart as she waited to deputies to arrive.
The employee, Olivia Eversole, reportedly asked the boy if he knew he was drinking alcohol, and he allegedly responded, "This is me and my mommy’s favorite beer. We drink it all the time."
He even pointed at a chewing tobacco and allegedly said, "That one’s my favorite one. I haven’t tried this one yet. My mommy hasn’t let me try that one yet, but I like this one the best."
WLWT reports Hampton told deputies when they arrived that the whole situation was an accident. She and the 6-year-old left.
The criminal complaint says two deputies went to a residence at Lakeside Drive and found the 6-year-old "at the end of the street on a scooter in the middle of the road with another Smirnoff in his hand." Deputies then took Hampton into custody.
Butler County Jail records show Hampton was arrested on charges of endangering children, contributing to the unruliness/delinquency of a child, and a probation violation.
Hampton is not the child’s mother, according to WLWT. The boy’s mother reportedly let the boy stay with his father and grandmother for the end of his summer break, but she did not know Hampton would be looking after him some of the time.
The boy reportedly told deputies Hampton handed him the Smirnoff Ice because it "helps him sleep at night."
Hampton is being held on $5,000 bond, and if she gets out, she will not be allowed to have contact with any juveniles, including her children.
