BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (TCD) -- Authorities are actively searching for a 37-year-old man accused of fatally strangling his roommate in 2019.
On July 25, the U.S. Marshals Service announced that Miles Tovar, who also goes by Miles James Hippner, is wanted by the Breckenridge Police for first-degree burglary, manslaughter, first-degree criminal trespass, and harassment. He is reportedly 5-foot-11, weighs 165 pounds, and has tattoos on his left upper arm and right shoulder.
According to KMGH-TV, on Nov. 6, 2019, shortly before 10 p.m., Breckenridge Police officers responded to the 1000 block of Grandview to a report of shots fired. At the scene, authorities reportedly found Tovar with a gunshot wound on his leg.
Upon further search of the scene, KMGH reports that officers found 29-year-old Brendan Rye, Tovar’s roommate, suffering from severe injuries, but he had not been shot.
Rye reportedly succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while Tovar’s injuries were not life-threatening.
According to KMGH, an autopsy report revealed Rye’s manner of death was ruled a homicide by strangulation.
Rye and Tovar allegedly got into an argument that night after drinking, and it got physical. Tovar reportedly heard a "loud bang" as a bullet hit him in the leg. He allegedly put Rye into a headlock for self-defense and heard another bang.
According to KMGH, Tovar held Rye on the ground until he stopped moving.
The U.S. Marshals Service said they’re offering a reward of $2,500 for information leading up to Tovar’s arrest. Tovar allegedly has ties to Colorado, New York, Florida, and the Caribbean Islands.
