DENVER (TCD) -- A 34-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of two men whose bodies were discovered near freeway ramps.
On Dec. 20, Denver Police announced they were conducting a homicide investigation involving an adult male who was killed near the I-70 at North Washington Street.
According to the arrest affidavit, police went to the scene at approximately 9:50 a.m. and found the victim suffering from "numerous apparent puncture wounds to his neck and face, and apparent blunt force injuries to his skull."
An officer reportedly found a "large rock immediately next to his body."
The affidavit says the victim, whose name was redacted from the affidavit, was likely killed in his sleep.
An autopsy determined the victim sustained "at least 25 puncture wounds to his neck and face, a large gouge to his neck that opened his jugular, and blunt force trauma to his skull resulting in fractures."
Then, on Dec. 21, Denver Police began investigating a second homicide at the same location, also involving an adult male.
According to the affidavit, at 11:49 a.m. on Dec. 21, a woman told police that two people she knew said a second victim was found dead under the bridge where he normally sleeps. The woman saw his body and called police.
When police found the second victim’s body, they noted he also suffered "apparent puncture wounds and significant blunt force trauma to the right side of his head."
The affidavit said that victim’s injuries "appeared remarkably similar" to the first victim’s. The man was reportedly wrapped in a sleeping bag and also seemingly was killed while he slept.
Denver Police said they believed the deaths were connected and arrested Andrew Mutch as a suspect in the case.
Mutch reportedly had blood on his hands and shoes, as well as a knife sticking out of his coat pocket.
On Friday, Dec. 30, the Denver District Attorney’s Office released a statement saying the office was charging Mutch with two counts of first-degree murder. According to the statement, the first victim was found under the westbound offramp, while the second was located under the eastbound ramp.
Police reportedly found Mutch sleeping about 15 feet from where they initially discovered the first victim.
