AIKEN, S.C. (TCD) -- A 19-year-old man was arrested and charged after allegedly stealing his ex-girlfriend’s mother’s ashes to obtain heroin.
On Oct. 11, Jackson Rutland’s ex-girlfriend told the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office that her former boyfriend had broken into her home, WSB-TV reports. The woman was reportedly not home at the time, but she told authorities she had had issues with Rutland breaking into her home in the past.
Later in the day, when the victim came home, she allegedly saw that her door was broken from being kicked in, and the place was ransacked. According to WSB, authorities found a white powdery substance along the floor believed to be the victim’s mother’s ashes.
A police report obtained by WLTX-TV alleges that Rutland "used some of her mom’s ashes to get heroin." It is unknown how Rutland planned to obtain heroin with the ashes.
Rutland was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 13, and charged with second-degree burglary, receiving stolen goods, and desecration of human remains, records show. He remains held in the Aiken County Detention Center on $25,000 bond.
