MELBOURNE, Fla. (TCD) -- A 23-year-old man allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend after she failed to text him back.
According to a news release from the Melbourne Police Department, on Dec. 20 at approximately 7:48 a.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Colbert Circle to a report of a shooting. At the scene, officers reportedly found the 23-year-old victim, Sha’dayla Johnson.
Police said despite lifesaving efforts, Johnson did not survive.
Upon further investigation, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, Carlos Jones, was reportedly identified as a person of interest.
In an interview, the victim’s father said his daughter was on her way to work, but he heard gunshots once she left, WPEC-TV reports. The father looked back and reportedly saw Jones peering from behind his daughter’s car.
The victim’s father allegedly went outside to check on Johnson and discovered his daughter lying facedown in front of her car, surrounded by blood.
According to police, Jones turned himself in at around 10:30 a.m. He reportedly told police that he was upset because Johnson wasn't picking up his calls or responding to his text messages.
Jones allegedly confronted his ex-girlfriend when she left for work, and Johnson turned away from him before Jones fatally shot her.
Investigators told WPEC that Johnson and Jones were in a relationship and had lived together for five months before their breakup two weeks before the shooting.
According to police, Jones was charged with premeditated first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
