NYPD officer's husband allegedly holds her hostage, shoots at police

NEW YORK (TCD) -- An off-duty New York City Police Department officer was reportedly held hostage by her husband at their house in Queens, which led to a standoff between the suspect and responding officers.

NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison spoke at a press conference and explained that at approximately 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, officers from the 106th Precinct responded to a call regarding an off-duty officer needing assistance. When they arrived, they reportedly spoke with the suspect, who "threatened to shoot them."

Harrison said the officers then called the Emergency Service Unit, who attempted to have another conversation with the suspect. The suspect, who was not publicly identified, "shot several times at those officers."

During that conversation with the Emergency Service Unit, Harrison said the off-duty officer was able to jump out of a second-story window and escape. The suspect reportedly shot at her and other uniformed officers. Officers reportedly returned fire, which caused the suspect to retreat.

Detective Brenda Reddick said the suspect’s brother showed up on the scene and was able to assist in negotiations by relaying information between officers and the suspect. According to Harrison, the suspect voluntarily came to the door and surrendered. Reddick said it was a "safe, successful apprehension."

Both the victim and the suspect were transported to a local hospital. He reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and the off-duty officer has a possible broken leg.

Harrison said at this stage in the investigation, it appears that the suspect used his wife’s service weapon.

According to WPIX-TV, charges against the suspect have not yet been announced.
