LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (TCD) -- The corrections official who helped an inmate escape from jail died Monday evening in Indiana following a pursuit with law enforcement officials.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding confirmed to CNN Vicky White died from a gunshot wound she sustained at the end of a chase with the U.S. Marshals.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton announced Monday, May 9, that former Assistant Director of Corrections Vicky White and inmate Casey White were apprehended in Indiana. The Whites (not related) got into a pursuit with the U.S. Marshals in Evansville, Indiana. Casey was reportedly driving the vehicle and Vicky was a passenger.
Wedding also held a press conference Monday to share more details about what happened in Indiana. Law enforcement officials located a vehicle nearly a week ago that "appeared to be related to the Alabama escapee and Sheriff's Office employee that had fled the area."
During their investigation, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office received information about a possible sighting, so the U.S. Marshals Task Force went to investigate. The Marshals then got into a pursuit with Casey and Vicky White on Highway 41. The U.S. Marshals Task Force ended up colliding with Casey and Vicky's car "to try to end the pursuit."
A photo provided to WHNT-TV shows a Cadillac sedan flipped on its side and surrounded by vehicles. They were previously thought to be driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck. It was found abandoned at a car wash last week.
Wedding said Vicky shot herself as the chase came to an end. He said he does not know the extent of her injuries, but they are "very serious."
U.S. Marshal Matt Keely told CNN Casey said as he was getting arrested, "Y'all help my wife. She shot herself in the head and I didn’t do it."
Casey White will be extradited back to Alabama from Indiana for arraignment.
Singleton called Casey and Vicky White's escape "well-planned and calculated" because the two "had plenty of resources, had cash, had vehicles, had everything they needed to pull this off."
The two were reportedly spotted at a hotel in Indiana, which is how the pursuit began, CNN reports.
Singleton praised the work of the other law enforcement officials and said, "We got a dangerous man off the street today. He is never going to see the light of day ever again."
When asked why he thought Vicky and Casey stayed in Evansville for several days despite being on the run, Wedding said, "They’re criminals. Sometimes they do things that are unexplainable."
