MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (TCD) -- A 41-year-old woman in the midst of a divorce and custody battle allegedly fatally stabbed her ex-husband and made it look like a crash death.
According to KFVS-TV, on Wednesday, July 20, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash scene at approximately 10:49 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 127 and Ava Road. The victim, Illinois Department of Transportation worker Edward Stallman, was reportedly involved in the crash, which occurred in an ongoing road construction zone.
At the scene, a bystander reportedly performed CPR, but Stallman was later transported to Saint Joseph’s Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, WSIL-TV reports.
In a release obtained by KFVS, Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph Cervantez said Edward Stallman and his ex-wife, Alexis Stallman, allegedly got into an altercation, and she fatally stabbed him. Authorities reportedly believe the construction zone was not a contributing factor in the victim’s death.
Alexis Stallman was charged with murder –– intent to kill/injure, murder –– strong prob kill/injure, murder –– other forcible felony, and aggravated domestic battery, records show. She reportedly remains held at the Jackson County Jail on a $2 million bond. Stallman is scheduled to appear in court on July 22, according to KFVS.
Jackson County court records show that the suspect had an upcoming divorce court hearing with the victim scheduled for July 28. Court records also reveal that the suspect and victim were in a custody battle involving a minor.
