HILO, Hawaii (TCD) -- A 41-year-old woman was hospitalized last week after she reportedly gave birth on a sidewalk and dragged the child, who was still attached to the umbilical cord.
On Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 5:15 p.m., Hawaii Police Department officers and personnel from the Hawaii Fire Department were called to downtown Hilo after learning about a homeless woman who had "given birth to a baby on the sidewalk and was reportedly then dragging the newborn."
Paramedics found the woman, cut the newborn’s umbilical cord, and began rendering aid to the child. Police said the baby girl was breathing but not moving. Medics quickly transported the girl to the Hilo Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment. She was reportedly released to Child Welfare Services custody after doctors determined she was in good condition.
According to Hawaii Police, the adult woman left the area but was soon caught by police and arrested for abandonment of a child. They also took her to the hospital for medical assistance. She has reportedly since been released from police custody because she was admitted to the hospital.
Hawaii Police said they are continuing to investigate and will forward charges to the prosecuting attorney’s office.
