ATLANTA (TCD) -- One woman was killed and another was injured after a customer allegedly opened fire in a Subway sandwich shop because he was angry about the amount of mayonnaise on his sandwich.
On Sunday, June 26, at 6:36 p.m., Atlanta Police officers responded to 74 Northside Dr. SW regarding a shooting. When they arrived, officers reportedly found two injured women, both of whom were transported to a nearby hospital. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The owner of the Subway on Northside Dr. told WAGA-TV, "Believe it or not, it was about too much mayonnaise on his sandwich."
Deputy Police Chief Charles Hampton Jr. spoke at a brief press conference Monday and shared more details about the incident. The woman who died is reportedly 26 years old, and the other victim is 24. Their names were not released. The victim who was shot but survived remains in critical condition, and her 5-year-old son was reportedly in the restaurant when the shooting occurred.
Hampton announced investigators arrested a 36-year-old man but did not release his name.
"As most people know, this is a tragic situation that did not have to occur," he said. "What we know is the suspect came inside the restaurant to order a sandwich and there was something wrong with the sandwich that made him so upset that he decided to take out his anger on two of the employees here."
While Hampton confirmed the customer was allegedly upset about the mayo, he said the incident was more about someone who "failed to resolve a conflict" by walking away or ordering another sandwich and instead opening fire.
"This is an incident that did not have to happen," he said.
