SPRING, Texas (TCD) -- A 48-year-old man was sentenced to prison this week for fatally shooting his neighbor in her front yard as they argued over a dog and his ex-wife.
According to a news release from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, on Jan. 24, 2017, Hector Campos killed Ana Weed in the 3400 block of Mourning Dove. During their testimony, the victim’s family said a feud began with Campos when Campos’ then-wife "took the couple’s infant daughter on a trip to Mexico in June 2016," the D.A.’s Office said.
Campos had reportedly organized the trip and later tried to cancel it. Weed drove Campos’ then-wife and baby to the airport, the D.A.’s Office said. Campos eventually filed for divorce.
According to the D.A.’s Office, months after the trip, Campos confronted Weed in her front yard about his estranged ex-wife and daughter’s whereabouts, and the two started to argue. The victim’s dog got away and began barking at Campos, and he attempted to kick the dog. Weed went to get the dog, and Campos shot her one time, the D.A.’s Office said.
Upon being interviewed, Campos told authorities Weed had pushed him and that she was holding gift wrap tape with the intention of choking him, so he shot her in defense, according to the D.A.’s Office. Weed reportedly had wrapping tape in her hand because she was wrapping gifts for her son.
On July 1, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Campos was convicted of murder and sentenced to 45 years in prison.
In a statement, Ogg said, "Hector Campos is a violent and vengeful man who killed his neighbor simply because they did not get along."
Ogg added, "Ana Weed, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, is dead and her family is devastated because an angry man with a gun could not control himself."
