LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (TCD) -- An 18-year-old was sentenced to life in prison without parole this week for shooting and killing his whole family in 2019.
WHNT-TV reports a judge handed Mason Sisk the sentence Thursday, Sept. 7, in Limestone County Court, following his April conviction on four counts of capital murder for fatally shooting his father, stepmother, and their three young children. The jury also convicted him of murder of two or more persons and three counts of murder where the victim is less than 14 years old.
The victims were 38-year-old John Sisk, 35-year-old Mary Sisk, 6-year-old Kane, 5-year-old Rorrie, and 6-month-old Colson. They all died from a gunshot wound to the head.
On Sept. 2, 2019, at around 11 p.m., Limestone County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a residence on Ridge Road in Elkmont and spoke with Mason Sisk, who said he "had been in the basement when he heard shots upstairs." He told deputies he "ran upstairs and heard footsteps, then went out the door."
Deputies, however, noticed "discrepancies in his statements," so they took him to the station, where he confessed. Sisk showed deputies where he threw the 9 mm gun after the shooting. The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office said the firearm was "in the home illegally."
In November 2020, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office announced Sisk would be charged with capital murder as an adult.
Sisk went to trial in 2022, but WAFF-TV reports the judge declared a mistrial when new evidence was found on Mary and John Sisk’s phones.
According to the sentencing memorandum shared by WZDK-TV, because Sisk was 14 years old when he killed his family, a judge could only sentence him to either life in prison without parole or life in prison with the possibility of parole after a minimum of 30 years.
