CARTER COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) -- Two Oklahoma police officers are facing murder charges following the death of a man in custody.
Shortly before midnight on July 4, 2019, Wilson Police officers were called to a disorderly conduct investigation. Authorities say officers Joshua Taylor, 25, and Brandon Dingman, 34, responded to the scene. When they arrived, they saw 28-year-old Jared Lakey, who reportedly did not comply with their commands.
Court documents said the two officers used their stun guns on Lakey more than 50 times, “which greatly exceeded what would have been necessary or warranted by the attendant circumstances,” and was a “substantial factor” in Lakey's death.
The Oklahoman reports a Carter County sheriff's deputy responded to the scene and helped get Lakey into custody. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said that shortly after that, Lakey stopped breathing and became unresponsive, and later died in a hospital.
On July 1, 2020, the Carter County District Attorney's Office issued arrest warrants for Taylor and Dingman. They were both arrested on second-degree murder charges.
