California dad accused of fatally shooting his football coach son

FRESNO, Calif. (TCD) -- A 52-year-old man was taken into custody for allegedly shooting and killing his son earlier in the week.
According to the Fresno Police Department, on Wednesday, June 15, at around 11 a.m., officers were called to the 4400 block of North Tamera Avenue regarding a shooting victim. Officers reportedly learned the victim, 31-year-old William "Billy" Wright, was shot in the upper body and was transported by a family member to Community Regional Medical Center. He was declared dead at 12:53 p.m.
Detectives learned Wright went to the residence on North Tamera Avenue to see some family when he allegedly got into an argument with his father, William Wright. William allegedly got a handgun out during the fight and shot his son. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail for murder.
Billy Wright coached football at some of the community colleges in the area. Reedley College posted a tribute to him and said he played on the team in 2009 and then returned 10 years later to serve as the student-athlete retention coordinator and defensive backs coach for the 2019 to 2020 season.
KMPH-TV reports Billy was going to be the assistant football coach at College of the Sequoias for the 2022 season.
