ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. (TCD) -- A 54-year-old man was recently found guilty of raping and killing a woman more than 36 years ago.
According to a news release from the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office, Nancy Daugherty was killed in the early hours of July 16, 1986. An investigation was launched with the help of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Chisholm Police Department, and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
According to CBS News, when Daugherty was found, she appeared to have been beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled.
Authorities reportedly collected DNA from more than 100 people during the investigation, and initially they still did not identify a lead suspect. In 2020, a DNA sample was sent to a company that performs public genealogy database analytics, and investigators were able to identify Michael Allen Carbo Jr. as a suspect, CBS News reports.
At the time of the crime, Carbo was reportedly 18 years old and lived near the crime scene. He allegedly went to school with the victim’s children.
On Aug. 16, the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office announced that Carbo was indicted by a grand jury with two counts of first-degree murder while committing criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 30, and each count carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
