ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (TCD) -- A 21-year-old woman was reportedly shot and killed August 11 during a Zoom call after her toddler found a loaded handgun.
According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, Shamaya Lynn was on a conference call Wednesday when one of the other attendees "saw a toddler in the background and heard a noise." Altamonte Police said Lynn "fell backward and never returned to the call." One of the attendees called 911, and paramedics and officers went to Lynn’s residence on Spanish Trace Drive.
The Altamonte Police Department wrote in their statement that first responders "did their best in rendering aid to Mrs. Lynn, but she was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head."
Upon further investigation, officers reportedly determined that Lynn’s toddler discovered the gun, which police say was "left unsecured by an adult in the apartment."
WESH-TV released part of the 911 call from the Zoom participant. According to WESH, the woman said to the dispatch, "We heard a loud kaboom, and then she leaned back and we just saw blood from her face."
The caller reportedly added, "The baby's back there crying, she's not answering or anything. We're calling her name, she's not responding."
According to WKMG-TV, another toddler was also at home at the time of the shooting. Authorities reportedly believe the gun belongs to the children’s father.
Altamonte Springs Police said in their statement they are working with the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office to determine charges for the gun’s owner.
