CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) -- Police arrested a 20-year-old man accused of kidnapping his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, leading police on a chase, and fatally shooting her over the weekend.
On Sunday, July 16, at approximately 11 p.m., the Fayetteville Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting that a male suspect went into a Wingstop restaurant on North Glynn Street, kidnapped a female employee at gunpoint, and fled the scene with her in a red Chevrolet Camaro.
Fayetteville Police pursued the vehicle from Fayette County into Clayton County, where the suspect, Cameron Ja’Michael Hopkins, turned into a Lovejoy High School driveway. Police said they performed a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver to stop the vehicle.
According to police, officers heard gunfire coming from the Camaro, and multiple bullets struck a police car.
Fayette County deputies reportedly used a chemical irritant to force Hopkins out of his vehicle. He eventually exited the Camaro, and police took him into custody.
Inside the vehicle, officers reportedly located the female victim, identified by WAGA-TV as Khaliyah Jones, deceased with several gunshot wounds.
Police booked Hopkins into the Clayton County Jail, where he remains held on charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a crime, and second-degree criminal damage.
According to the Lovejoy Police Department, Hopkins previously kidnapped Jones at gunpoint and forced her into his vehicle a year ago in a Walmart parking lot.
