CHICAGO (TCD) -- Police are searching for the person or persons responsible for shooting a 12-year-old girl in the head while she was on the way home from celebrating her birthday.
On March 2, Chicago Police tweeted, "Another child has become the victim of senseless gun violence and it must stop. A 12-year-old girl celebrating her birthday was shot in the head last night in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood while driving with her family."
The girl, identified as Nyziereya London Moore, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. WGN-TV reports Moore died from her injuries Friday, March 4.
According to WGN, Chicago Police responded to the 2300 block of West 72nd Place on Tuesday, March 1, after receiving reports of a shooting. Someone reportedly opened fire in the street and hit Moore, who was in the car with her family. She turned 12 that day.
CBS Chicago reports Moore’s family drove her to Holy Cross Hospital, but she was transferred to Comer’s Children’s Hospital, where she died.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown reportedly said the shooting included rival gangs and called the incident "heinous, reckless, senseless," according to WGN.
He reportedly said during a press conference, "The full brunt of every resource we have will bear down on the gang responsible for this."
