Tucson boy, 13, accused of fatally stabbing mother at home

TUCSON, Ariz. (TCD) -- A 13-year-old male was arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing his mother at their home and fleeing.
According to the Tucson Police Department, a man called 911 on Jan. 11 at around 9 p.m. and reported that his neighbor had been stabbed at her residence on the 8200 block of South Via Del Forjador. The neighbor told dispatch that the suspect was believed to be the victim’s son and he had run away after the alleged attack.
Tucson Fire Department medics arrived on the scene and helped the victim. The victim, 60-year-old Mary Ainuu, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in critical condition where she ultimately died from her wounds.
Tucson Police said in their statement officers from the Operations Division East as well as SWAT and K-9 units showed up to search for the suspect. The teen was eventually apprehended several blocks away on East Esmond Loop.
According to the statement, detectives from the department’s Domestic Violence Unit and Homicide Unit investigated the scene and believe the suspect got into a verbal confrontation with his mother.
Police said, "As the confrontation escalated, the victim was physically assaulted and ultimately stabbed."
No one else was at the home when Ainuu was hurt. The suspect was reportedly charged with first-degree murder/domestic violence. He was transported to the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center.
It was not immediately clear whether the suspect will be charged as a juvenile or adult.
