MOAB, Utah (TCD) -- The Grand County Sheriff’s Office announced new updates regarding the case of Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner, newlyweds who were found dead at a campsite in the La Sal Mountains.
In a statement released Jan. 19, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said investigators "narrowed down the victims' date of death to August 14, 2021." The couple was found Aug. 18 in an irrigation ditch near the South Mesa campsite area by a friend who had been looking for them.
The State Medical Examiner also reportedly determined Schulte and Turner "had been shot multiple times" and that the ballistics evidence at the scene matched the evidence from their bodies. Additionally, the State Medical Examiner determined neither had been sexually assaulted.
The Sheriff’s Office wrote they have "persons of interest" but have not identified a suspect yet.
Initially, some people linked Gabby Petito’s disappearance to Schulte and Turner’s killings, but the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said they were not connected. The statement said, "In the course of this investigation, there has been considerable conjecture that Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were somehow involved in the double homicide. Upon investigation, the FBI and Florida Investigators have determined, based on electronic transmission evidence, that neither Petito nor Laundrie were involved in this case."
The Sheriff’s Office concluded their statement by urging people to "be careful about sharing information on social media" because it can often be "misinformed, inaccurate, and unhelpful to the criminal investigation, if not dangerous."
