PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (TCD) -- A 42-year-old homicide suspect from Pennsylvania was reportedly killed in an officer-involved shooting earlier this week.
According to WWBT-TV, on Wednesday, June 1, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a slow-speed chase reportedly began in Hopewell, Virginia, between Derrick Avey and Virginia State Troopers. In a Virginia State Police release obtained by WWBT, authorities said, "During the course of a pursuit, that started in the City of Hopewell with a City of Hopewell sheriff’s deputy, the suspect vehicle finally stopped near the intersection of Temple Avenue and River Road."
According to WGAL-TV, Avey allegedly confronted officers with a firearm and authorities opened fire, killing Avey.
Avey was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was reportedly transported to the chief medical examiner for further examination and an autopsy.
Pennsylvania State Troopers reportedly responded to the 8900 block of McClays Mill Road in Lurgan Township, Pennsylvania, to notify Avey’s next of kin. However, WGAL reports Avey’s wife, Kyline Avey, had not been seen or heard from for several days. Upon further search of Avey’s property, state police allegedly found the body of his wife in a wooded area. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and he was reportedly suspected in her death, according to WGAL.
Kyline’s autopsy is scheduled for June 3, WHP-TV reports.
