LEXINGTON, S.C. (TCD) -- Three women were arrested in connection to a child abuse investigation at a day care center.
According to a news release from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began approximately a month ago after a mother from Windsor Academy brought her child into a hospital with a broken leg. The day care center reportedly told the mother that her child hurt its leg on the railing of a crib.
Detectives allegedly requested to review video surveillance from inside Windsor Academy, and two women at the center, 38-year-old Amy Grice and 49-year-old Jeannie Locklear, said the camera system was not working at the time of the incident. According to the Sheriff’s Office, authorities determined the women intentionally deleted the video after watching it themselves.
Recovered video surveillance shows 36-year-old Shayna McKnight "forcefully folded the child’s legs under the child’s body and flipped the child into a crib while holding the child’s left leg," the Sheriff’s Office says.
The child was allegedly crawling and playing without visible pain prior to the incident. After the alleged abuse, the child was reportedly unable to put weight on the leg.
McKnight, Grice, and Locklear were arrested on Friday, April 29. According to the Sheriff’s Office, McKnight was charged with infliction of great bodily harm upon a child, while Grice and Locklear were charged with obstructing justice.
The South Carolina Department of Social Services is reportedly assisting with the child abuse investigation.
