RIVERSIDE, Calif. (TCD) -- The body of an 87-year-old woman was discovered Sunday inside a refrigerator when local police were checking on a woman at the residence.
Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback told KTLA-TV officers went to a home on the 6600 block of New Ridge Drive at 9:30 a.m. regarding a welfare check. The woman’s family on the East Coast reportedly contacted police because they had not heard from her in several weeks.
The victim’s name was not immediately released.
KTLA reports the home had hoarder conditions and the woman’s body was discovered in the garage refrigerator. The woman’s 64-year-old daughter reportedly lived with the victim as her caretaker.
According to KABC-TV, Riverside Officer Javier Cabrera said the daughter had "inconsistencies with her story as to her mom’s whereabouts."
Cabrera said, "The officers detained the daughter and ultimately went inside the residence."
KTLA and KABC both report the daughter was released.
According to KTLA, an autopsy is pending, and investigators are trying to determine if the woman died from natural causes before being placed in the refrigerator.
