CHICAGO (TCD) -- A 23-year-old man who was taken into custody for allegedly striking a police officer with a vehicle reportedly tried to escape an interview room at a Chicago police station by climbing through the ceiling.
Chicago Police Department officers arrested Tajze Mullins on March 17 at 8:39 p.m. on the 7100 block of South Lafayette Avenue after he allegedly hit an officer with his car on the 1100 block of South Dusable Lakeshore Drive. A police officer fired his gun, but no one was struck.
Mullins was taken into custody on charges of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, escape — felon from a peace officer, and obstructing identification.
According to court documents cited by NBC Chicago, police were notified that a black BMW sought in connection with alleged aggravated battery on a Cook County Sheriff’s Office deputy was being driven on Lakeshore Drive. Officers located the car and told Mullins and his passenger to get out of the car. Mullins allegedly put the car in reverse to get away from the police and struck an officer and a police car in the process.
The officer’s leg was broken in the incident, according to WGN-TV.
NBC Chicago reports police and a helicopter pursued Mullins as he drove on the Dan Ryan Expressway. He reportedly left his car in a parking lot, and officers found him hiding under a porch.
When officers brought him to Area Three Police Headquarters for an interview, Mullins allegedly ripped the vent cover off the ceiling and climbed up into it. WGN says Mullins allegedly did "extensive" damage to the room’s ceiling, electrical, and duct work.
Mullins, who reportedly has outstanding warrants out of Texas, is being held without bail.
