ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (TCD) -- Three high school students were shot Wednesday afternoon in their school parking lot by a teen who allegedly fired a gun from a car.
The Orangeburg County School District published a message on their website homepage about the incident, saying, "Today our school community experienced the day that we’ve worked hand in hand with law enforcement to prepare for, but have always prayed would never actually happen."
According to the message, the shooting occurred during afternoon dismissal. The school district said the three students who were shot are in stable condition.
WIS-TV reports Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell confirmed a juvenile was in custody. The suspect was reportedly charged with three counts of assault and battery. According to The Associated Press, the suspect is 14 and was on campus an hour after the shooting.
Ravenell said in a press conference it was an "isolated incident," adding that he is in "constant contact" with a prosecutor to see if the suspect will be waived to adult court. Ravenell said if convicted as an adult, the maximum sentence would be 30 years.
The Associated Press reports Ravenell believes others will be charged in connection to the shooting.
