MERCED, Calif. (TCD) -- A 9-month-old child was reportedly fatally struck during a drive-by shooting.
In the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 9, the Merced Police Department responded to a McDonald’s at 13th and R streets to a report of a shooting, police announced. At the scene, authorities reportedly found the 9-month-old victim, Darius King Grigsby, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
According to police, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Upon further investigation, detectives concluded that a shooting occurred in the 1200 block of Q Street while Grigsby was being pushed in a stroller by his mother and her boyfriend, police said. A car drove by and one of the occupants allegedly fired a gun, hitting Grigsby.
Authorities do not know the motive but believe it is possible that one of the parents was a target and the child was hit by accident, KFSN-TV reports.
The investigation is ongoing.
