BELLINGHAM, Wash. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old woman was recently sentenced to 34 years in prison in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl on Nov. 30, 2019.
According to a news release from the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s Office, on Aug. 2, Kamee Dixon was given the prison sentence for aggravated homicide by abuse. However, the Prosecutor’s Office wanted the court to impose 57 years in prison based on the evidence from the investigation.
On Jan. 23, 2020, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the girl’s death a homicide, the Bellingham Herald reports.
Dixon was reportedly the primary caregiver for the victim, Hazel Homan, and she was in a relationship with the toddler’s biological father, Brandon Homan.
During the trial, Dixon’s defense attorneys, Emily Beschen and Douglas Hyldahl, reportedly claimed that Hazel accidentally choked on a breakfast sandwich, and the child died due to the lack of oxygen to her brain.
According to the Bellingham Herald, the prosecution argued that Hazel suffered a traumatic brain injury caused by Dixon repeatedly hitting her. Hazel allegedly suffered regular abuse at the hands of Dixon for around five months before the toddler’s death.
In a statement, the Prosecutor’s Office wrote, "We are obviously saddened by this case, but thank all of those who keep the victim’s memory alive. In remembrance, we would ask the community to be vigilant and to immediately report suspected abuse of children."
