Texas shoplifting suspect allegedly stabs deputy in the neck

AUSTIN, Texas (TCD) -- A 40-year-old man accused of shoplifting allegedly stabbed a deputy in the neck.

According to a news release from the Austin Police Department, on Saturday, Nov. 12, officers responded to the H-E-B supermarket on Riverside Drive to a report of a stabbing. At the scene, authorities reportedly learned Jaime Eliseo Canales stabbed a Bastrop County Sheriff's deputy.

Surveillance video revealed Canales shoplifting in the store before the stabbing, police said. As Canales tried to leave the store with stolen goods, he was reportedly stopped by employees.

"Canales returned the stolen items and asked for law enforcement," police said. When a deputy with the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office showed up at the scene for his regular shift, Canales allegedly stabbed him numerous times, including once in the neck.

According to police, the deputy underwent surgery due to the severity of his injuries. The victim is reportedly a former officer with the Austin Police Department.

Canales was reportedly arrested and eventually confessed to stabbing the deputy. According to police, the suspect "showed no remorse." He was booked into the Travis County Jail for attempted capital murder of a peace officer on $100,000 bond.

Police said Canales has a criminal past, including prior charges for "shoplifting, robbery, and assault, including attacking and threatening his mother." Canales allegedly physically attacked and threatened to kill a victim during a previous shoplifting incident, but the case was dropped.
